The radical 'sail' design Utzon envisioned stretched the limits of engineering and knowledge of the time. The Sydney Opera House took a total of 14 years to build and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on the 20th of October 1973. Danish architect Jorn Utzon designed the unique structure and construction began in 1962. The base for the building was started in 1959 however designs were not completed for another four years. Located on the edge of the harbour, the Sydney Opera House is a stunning tourist attraction, architectural marvel, historically significant landmark and home to some of Sydney's best culture and theatre. One of the most well recognised landmarks in Sydney, the Opera House is an internationally recognised Australian icon and is one of the most popular attractions in Sydney city.
